Jayne Trent asks the City Councillor, Mayor Candidates
Are you for, against, or undecided about land application of biosolids? If you are undecided will do you plan on taking what ever advice city staff puts forward to council or will you be doing your own independent research?
William James Turnbull
We need to use proven processes that completely eliminate any harmful chemicals before considering land application of biosolids IE Run the biosolids through a machine that produces electricity & bio - pellets.
Stephen Karpuk
I am against. I think that the risk for contamination with heavy metals, drugs, etc cannot be overlooked. I think we would be better to look at thermal conversion/incineration options with heat recovery for energy. Many places in Canada and elsewhere have obtained a net zero energy cost on this process, with some now looking at net positive outputs. Thank you for your question.
Caroline King
At this time I remain undecided. My husband comes from a farming background and biosolids have long been used in the industry. The new research is what I am concerned with and sorting that out is something I continue to work on.
Alison Klie
I am leaning towards being against. There seem to be a lot of risks in the process and I would like to learn more about alternative options. It is on my list of things to look in to further and I would definitely be open to hearing advice from those who have more experience with the process.
Dale Bass
Completely against.
Arjun Singh
Land application of biosolids has had a long history and is currently the only viable method in our region for biosolid use. Biosolids are an unavoidable byproduct of our waste water treatment in Kamloops. There are growing concerns about increased toxicity of biosolids negatively impacting human health in land application. The city has formed a biosolids committee which is looking at all these issues. I will await their report back to council and will do my own independent research as well.
Gerald Watson
I am undecided. I will evaluate whatever advice is put forward by city staff and if I think the advice is not properly researched indicate to staff what I expect as appropriate research to validate the recommendation.
