Kamloops Voter asks the City Councillor, Mayor Candidates
Are there any specific ways that you can see that the city can better serve the business community?
William James Turnbull
Streamline the entire relationship process with the business community IE Efficacy with applications, inspections, permits & exemptions. Increase council & staff's direct involvement with Venture Kamloops. We need to ensure our funding is lining up with the OCP (Official Community Plan). Doesn't make sense to risk opposed visions within the city government itself.

The biggest thing I want changed for the entire business sector of Kamloops is to lower the tax brackets to meet with the provincial averages. One in particular is to lower the industry rate and encourage more investment and development to come to Kamloops. I would also like to see the streets cleaned up on the North Shore from homelessness and crime. I would like to work with Businesses, RCMP and non profit Organizations to make the North Shore more desirable and safe so that we add to and retain the businesses in the area. Entice more people to come to the North Shore.

I believe revitalizing and redensifying downtown and the Kamloops core will greatly improve local business. Downtown Kamloops should be a destination where locals and visitors should want to spend lots of time, walking around the shops and eating some incredible food. Right now we have a bit of a parking issue but I believe that if we can get more high rise real estate buildings near the core less people would need to drive to work and therefor it would free up parking. By investing in the core of Kamloops we will attract more tourism which will improve business revenue. I also believe that if we could move the farmers market to a block or two of Victoria street and have the booths down the centre while the stores are open down the side we can really capitalize on the proven success of our farmers market.

One of the largest complaints I have heard from the business community is red tape. The city should ensure they are working with businesses and not creating barriers for those who choose to help Kamloops thrive. We cannot afford to be a "can't do" city.

I would like to conduct a review of our business/commercial tax rates if re-elected
Sadie Hunter
In comparison to other municipalities of similar size, Kamloops has some of the highest light industrial and business tax rates by a large margin. I plan to bring forward a recommendation to review and revise these rates to align them more closely with other communities to position Kamloops as a more business-friendly city. This will encourage economic development and growth, which translates into jobs and stability.
Caroline King
Kamloops has a business and industry tax rate that is in some cases 3 and 4 times higher than our neighboring communities. If we expect to be able to compete for those new investors and new industries currently coming online, we should be seeking ways to either reduce or freeze those rates.

1. Ensure existing businesses are supported by a fair tax and regulatory system.
2. Build and market a positive climate that is positioned to attract new sustainable, businesses.
3. Enhance collaborative relationships between city and business.
4. Focus on support and retention of small business.
