Kamloops Voter asks the City Councillor, Mayor Candidates
What additions or improvements would you like to see to the recreational offerings in Kamloops?
William James Turnbull
Washrooms that are open, clean & safe. More green space. Safer bike lanes connected to all of Kamloops & area. Develop the Public Beach on Kamloops Lake & have transit to it. Shovel crews and sidewalk snow sweeper machines keeping pedestrian paths clear in all areas of Kamloops (quite relying on property owners to do it). Mini water slides throughout the city. Community ponds / ice rinks. Geocaching Events. Evening Night Life & Activities.
Corally Delwo
I would like to see Memorial Arena cleaned up, all arenas including Brock and Valleyview to get facelifts, And I would like to see the old golf course at MacArthur Island utilized. My ideas would be to add a turf football field, another outdoor box rink, and if room permits another indoor rink.
Alison Klie
I would like to see a new concert house. Something in between the size of the Sagebrush and the Sandman Centre. I would also love to see a new water park, a few nearby cities have proven how great an attraction they can be to tourism. I would also like to see the farmers market moved to Victoria Street.
Beat Klossner
I would like to see more natural spaces. We have a lot of sports facilities, but are lacking ,quiet relaxing spaces. I like to see parks just for strolling and hanging out, more spaces like the libraries where one can meet and relax. This could be in form of "Community Houses" in Neighborhoods. We have many recreational offering that are competitive, we forgot that recreation could also be relaxing.
Nicholas Adams
I would like to see a pool returned to McDonald Park or a pool at McArthur Island. A performing arts center would also be a fantastic addition to our community as we do not have an intermediate sized Venue in Kamloops.
Donovan Cavers
I think we need to ensure a balance between use of facilities by local residents and out of town visitors here to attend tournaments.
Donovan Cavers
I think the most important thing when it comes to recreation is ensuring a balance of access to facilities between us (local residents) and those visiting Canada's Tournament Capital for tournaments.
Sadie Hunter
I believe we've done a great job with building up the mountain biking trails and increasing access to trails. I believe there are never too many green spaces within the city, which encourage passive recreation, more pedestrian access. An example of this would be greening up the corridor along Notre Dame drive. I access our trails and facilities on a regular basis, the only improvement or addition I would recommend would be to increase the accessibility of some of these, looking to improve/add accessible recreation opportunities where possible and to remove any of the barriers that may exist.
Caroline King
I think Kamloops has some really great recreational offerings but I worry about the recent take away's from neighborhoods. McDonald Park pool removal had a pretty big impact on that neighborhood and while the new splash park has picked up some of the slack, it's still a noticeable void. I think there should be a renewed focus on supporting neighborhood parks and outdoor spaces, those are the things that tend to make communities desirable.

Aberdeen, Sahali, Downtown, Westsyde and Brock have pools and/or spray parks. Valleyview, Rose Hill, Juniper Ridge, Dallas and Barnheartvale do not. An addition of a pool and/or spray park in this residential region, would be an asset. A performing arts centre that is mutually funded through the City of Kamloops, provincial and federal funding and local fundraising, that meets the needs of the fine arts community, tourism and the city as a whole. Restructuring and landscaping of green space at MacArthur Island Park, for sports and lesiure. The old BMX and golf course site is in desperate need of green space transformation, proper parking, safe facilities and roadway.

I'd like to see the city pay better attention to the aging infrastructure of the facilities, particularly those in the neighbourhoods.
Jennifer Adams
A water slide and free public outdoor skating rink - maybe both in the same spot so it could be an all season family fun land.
