Kieran Maloney asks the School Trustee Candidates

Will school have two week of spring break

Beat Klossner

Yes. A majority of teachers, students and parents spoke out in favor of a two week spring break.

Joe Small

I am in total support of a two week spring break as are our district staff and parents when surveyed back in February/March, 2017. Research supports the benefits of a two week spring break, as studies have shown students and staff come back more refreshed and ready to complete the final stretch of the school year. As a new board, we need to revisit the motion passed at the March 13th, 2017 board meeting and remove the portion of that motion that hinders the negotiation for a two week spring break starting in 2020.

I do believe that the two-week spring break system unfairly downloads the cost of the extended break on to parents, and this disproportionally affects lower income families. I.E. many working families that cannot afford to extend their vacation plans and are forced instead to pay for childcare.

With that said I understand that the second week of spring break saves the School District a significant amount of money. I would be interested in finding out where those savings could be reallocated within the current budget. To my understanding, there are also benefits to maintenance staff’s productivity at a midpoint in the year. Also, this extra week can also provide an opportunity for teacher and support staff additional training.
