Resident of: Dufferin/Southgate

Political Experience:

In 2014 I ran for School Board Trustee. I have been fortunate enough to have been elected to serve multiple terms as the Secretary-Treasurer role for one board I am a very active member of. In the past several years I have supported various election campaigns at all levels of government in a multitude of capacities. I would also like to add my board experience as a 4-H member when I was young because it was probably my first step into politics without even realising it.

Adam would bring a fun dynamic to the board. I believe we forget wonder sometimes in our decision making.

Kieran Maloney asks the School Trustee Candidates

Will school have two week of spring break

Adam Jensen Answered

I do believe that the two-week spring break system unfairly downloads the cost of the extended break on to parents, and this disproportionally affects lower income families. I.E. many working families that cannot afford to extend their vacation plans and are forced instead to pay for childcare.

With that said I understand that the second week of spring break saves the School District a significant amount of money. I would be interested in finding out where those savings could be reallocated within the current budget. To my understanding, there are also benefits to maintenance staff’s productivity at a midpoint in the year. Also, this extra week can also provide an opportunity for teacher and support staff additional training.

I have had several long-term jobs and a few short-term jobs in this community. In reverse order, they go like this; Street Maintenance and Street marking technician with the City of Kamloops, Sign Technician with the Ministry of Transportation, Lifeguard with the City of Kamloops. The next three jobs I had at the same time Toys 'R' Us sales representative, Lifeguard with the YMCA, Labour with the City of Kamloops.

Maddie asks the School Trustee Candidates

I would like to know what you plan to do about the school dress codes and the implementation of them. Currently the dress codes and the implementation body shame girls, vilify boys, and are discriminstory.

Adam Jensen Answered

Thank you for your question, Maddie. I believe that boys of all ages need to learn to accept the beauty of the female form without objectifying it. Also, we need to stop telling young men to "man up." As well as encourage them that men come in all shapes, and sizes, not just the superhero body type from your favourite Marvel movie (same goes for women). In addition, I support resources, programs, and initiatives like SOGI 123. https://www.sogieducation.org/

Cam Johnson asks the School Trustee Candidates

What are your thoughts on the overcrowding of many of the cities school’s? And what can be done to help that problem?

Adam Jensen Answered

I believe overcrowding to be a complex issue and it deserves a close look at catchment areas and enrollment numbers before making a final decision. However, I do feel that too many portables at a school can be a bad thing, but at the same time, a couple portables utilized to be fiscally responsible with moderate enrollment growth in a school to be a fair decision to make. If I were elected as a school board trustee I would be interested in working towards capital projects to improve our existing schools as well as a possible new school if it were deemed viable. Ultimately it comes down to how do we best support the students learning experience in School District 73.

William Turnbull asks the City Councillor, Mayor, School Trustee Candidates

Why do you want to be elected?

Adam Jensen Answered

I am running for a Trustee position because I have been a member of this community for the entire 33 years of my life, and my family has lived in Kamloops for three generations. I have many friends, family and other connections in the area that have children in the school system that I care very much about. Although I do not have children myself yet. I am also running to encourage more adults that don’t have kids or even plan to have kids to get involved in any way they can with youth organizations in their community. I believe it takes a community to raise a child, and that the youth of today are our future and need to be advocates for them, so they can grow up to be intelligent supporters of their communities.
